# We Use Both: Claude Code vs Cursor from Inside an AI Agency

We run Claude Code and Cursor on the same codebase daily at Prometheus. Here is the honest difference between them — and which one makes sense for your team.

We run both. That's probably the most useful thing to know before you read anything else here. At Prometheus, Cursor is the primary IDE every team member works in daily. Claude Code runs in a separate terminal window, pointed at the same codebase, handling tasks we've defined and handed off. They don't conflict — and after a few weeks of experimenting with them together, they've become genuinely complementary in ways that weren't obvious at first.

The "Claude Code vs Cursor" framing appears constantly in developer forums and search results, but it sets up a false choice. These tools are architecturally different in ways that make them better at different things. Understanding that difference is what determines whether you get real value from one, the other, or both — and it's especially relevant if you're evaluating AI tools for a team that doesn't have a full engineering department.

## What Cursor Actually Is

Cursor is an integrated development environment — an IDE, like VS Code, which is exactly what it's built on. The difference is that AI is woven into the core interaction model rather than added as an extension you install. You work inside Cursor exactly as you'd work in any editor. Select code, press a keyboard shortcut, give instructions, and see results in real time.

The interaction is *interactive and iterative*. You're in a tight feedback loop. You see a suggestion, accept or reject it, move forward. Tab accepts autocomplete. Cmd+K opens AI chat. Cmd+Shift+I opens Composer, which allows the AI to work across multiple files simultaneously — useful for refactoring a component pattern across a whole codebase, or updating shared UI elements that appear in many places.

We configured Cursor with Claude 3.5 Sonnet as the primary model in early 2025. GPT-4o sits as a fallback. In practice, Sonnet handles the overwhelming majority of our development and content work without us needing the fallback.

## What Claude Code Actually Is

Claude Code is not an IDE. It's a command-line AI agent. You run it from your terminal, point it at a project, give it a task description, and it works — autonomously. It reads files, edits files, runs shell commands, checks for errors, and iterates on its own until the task is done or it hits a boundary you've set.

The interaction model is *agentic*. You describe a desired outcome, and the agent figures out the path. For this to work well, your project needs a CLAUDE.md file — a guidance document in the root directory that tells Claude Code what conventions to follow, which commands it can run, which directories to leave alone, and what tools it has permission to use.

On the Prometheus codebase, our CLAUDE.md specifies the TypeScript patterns we follow, what build commands exist, what the CMS data model looks like, and which file paths require extra caution. Claude Code reads it at the start of every session and operates within those constraints consistently.

## The Core Difference in Practice

Here's the frame that actually matters for choosing between them:

**Cursor** is better when the task requires judgment calls you'd make differently depending on what you find. You're exploring, iterating, and making decisions as you go. The AI accelerates your thinking and your typing — but you're still in the loop on every decision.

**Claude Code** is better when the task is well-defined and the execution is the tedious part. You specify the outcome with enough precision, hand it off, and do something else while it runs.

A McKinsey Global Institute 2023 analysis of developer productivity found that AI-assisted developers complete coding tasks 55% faster than developers working without AI assistance. That figure reflects both interaction modes — real-time assistance (Cursor-style) and autonomous execution (Claude Code-style) both contribute to the productivity gain, but through different mechanisms and for different task types.

GitHub's 2024 Developer Survey found 92% of US-based developers were using AI coding tools in or outside of work — up from 70% in 2023. IDC's 2025 Developer Technology Buyer Survey corroborated this, finding that 73% of enterprise development teams had deployed at least one AI coding tool. Adoption has crossed the mainstream threshold. The question now is how to use these tools with enough precision to capture real productivity, not just novelty value.

## Our Actual Workflow at Prometheus

On any given workday, our development and content work divides roughly as follows:

When someone is actively building — writing a new component, debugging a specific error, working through an API integration, reviewing a design change — they're in Cursor. The interactive loop is essential here. You can't hand off an open-ended debugging session to an autonomous agent if you haven't defined what "fixed" looks like.

When a task is well-defined and repeatable — scan all published blog posts for banned words and quality issues, update a batch of SEO metadata fields, run TypeScript checks across recently modified files, generate FAQs for a set of draft posts — we spin up Claude Code in a terminal. The CLAUDE.md guidance handles the context, and Claude Code handles the execution.

We ran Claude Code to perform a full content audit of the Prometheus site — scanning 20+ published posts against SEO standards, quality metrics, and internal linking gaps. It produced a detailed findings report in about 45 minutes. The equivalent manual review would have taken two to three hours, and Claude Code found inconsistencies a quick human scan would likely have missed.

Simon Willison, creator of Datasette and one of the most widely-read writers on practical AI tooling, described the tradeoff in a 2025 post: "Claude Code is remarkable when you give it a clear goal. The quality degrades when the task is underspecified. That's a feature, not a bug — it forces you to think clearly about what you want before handing it off."

## For Business Teams Without Developers

If your team doesn't include dedicated developers, the question looks different. You're not choosing between two development workflows — you're asking which tool gets you furthest without a technical prerequisite.

Cursor is the better starting point for non-developers. You can use it to explore an existing codebase, make guided modifications to files, and build intuition for what AI-assisted editing can do — without writing code from scratch. The interactive loop is forgiving: if a suggestion is wrong, you reject it and try again. The cost of a bad AI suggestion is one extra prompt, not a broken system.

Claude Code requires a clearer mental model of the desired outcome before you invoke it. It's designed for execution, not exploration. Give it a vague task description and it will execute something — but not necessarily what you intended. For teams in the earlier stages of AI adoption, the interactive mode is more appropriate than autonomous execution.

Teams running periodic autonomous tasks — content audits, batch fixes, code maintenance — typically spend $15–50/month on Claude Code API usage. High-volume autonomous workloads run higher; the Anthropic console provides granular usage tracking.

Stanford HAI's 2024 research on AI-augmented software development found that AI coding tools reduce task completion time by 45–55% across professional software tasks. At under $175/month combined for a five-person team, the productivity math is favorable for almost any team making regular use of these tools.

## When to Use Each One

**Use Cursor when:** the task requires judgment calls you can't fully specify in advance. Active development, debugging, exploring unfamiliar code, reviewing pull requests, implementing a design where the right approach isn't obvious until you start — all Cursor territory. Also the right choice when you want to understand what the AI is doing, not just that it did it.

**Use Claude Code when:** the task is well-defined, the output is verifiable, and you'd rather do something else while it runs. Batch processing, consistency checks, multi-file refactors following a clear pattern, build verification, content audits — Claude Code territory. The test: could you write a checklist of steps for a capable intern? If yes, Claude Code can probably handle it.

A useful workflow: use Cursor to define and validate the approach for a new task, then hand the verified pattern to Claude Code to execute at scale or on a recurring schedule.

## The Bottom Line

The "vs" framing misses the point. These tools don't compete for the same workflow. Cursor makes you faster in real time by amplifying your judgment. Claude Code handles the well-defined work that doesn't need your judgment at every step. The teams getting the most from AI tooling are using both — interactive AI for exploration and active work, autonomous AI for execution and maintenance.

For teams starting from scratch, the recommended order is: begin with Cursor's interactive mode to build intuition for what AI handles well, identify which tasks become routine, then layer in Claude Code to handle those routine tasks autonomously.
