# Token

The basic unit of text AI processes — roughly three-quarters of a word — that determines cost and quality.

## Definition

A token is the basic unit of text that AI models process. It''s roughly three-quarters of a word in English — "artificial intelligence" is 2-3 tokens, while "the" is 1 token. Every AI API interaction is measured in tokens: how many go in (your prompt) and how many come out (the response).

Tokens determine three things: cost (you pay per token with most AI APIs), quality (more context tokens generally mean better answers), and speed (more tokens take longer to process).

Understanding token economics is practical business knowledge. A GPT-4 API call that processes 10,000 tokens costs roughly $0.30-0.60 depending on the model. That''s fine for occasional use, but if you''re running 10,000 operations daily, the math changes. Cheaper models or [private AI deployment](/glossary/private-ai-local-ai-deployment) may make more sense.

Tokens also define the [context window](/glossary/context-window) — the maximum number of tokens a model can consider at once. Bigger windows let you process longer documents, provide more context, and handle more complex tasks. But bigger windows also cost more per operation.

[Prompt engineering](/glossary/prompt-engineering) is partly about token efficiency — getting the best output from the fewest input tokens. Skilled prompters deliver the same quality at a fraction of the cost.

## Why It Matters for Middle Market Companies

Tokens are how AI gets priced. Understanding token economics lets you deliver the same value at a fraction of the cost — or scale your AI operations without blowing your budget.

This matters more than most people realize. Companies that don''t understand tokens often either underspend (using too few tokens for quality results) or overspend (using expensive models for tasks that cheaper models handle fine).

The practical takeaway: not every AI task needs the most powerful (and expensive) model. Email summarization doesn''t need GPT-4. Contract analysis might. Matching the right model to each task based on token costs is a real competitive advantage.

Our [AI enablement services](/services/ai-enablement) include cost optimization as standard practice. We help you architect AI systems that use the right model — at the right token cost — for each use case. The [AI Quotient Assessment](/ai-quotient) evaluates your current AI cost efficiency.
