# AI Hallucination

When an AI model generates information that sounds plausible but is factually incorrect or fabricated.

## Definition

An AI hallucination is when a [large language model](/glossary/large-language-model-llm) generates text that sounds confident and plausible but is factually wrong, made up, or unsupported by its training data. The model isn''t lying — it doesn''t understand truth. It''s predicting the most likely next tokens based on patterns, and sometimes those patterns produce nonsense that reads like fact.

Hallucinations come in different flavors. Factual hallucinations state things that are verifiably false. Attribution hallucinations cite sources that don''t exist. Logical hallucinations make reasoning errors while sounding coherent. Context hallucinations ignore information you provided and make up answers instead.
