# AI Agent

A software entity that perceives its environment, makes decisions, and takes actions to accomplish goals.

## Definition

An AI agent is a software entity that perceives its environment, makes decisions, and takes actions to accomplish specific goals. It operates within defined boundaries, uses tools and APIs, maintains context across interactions, and executes multi-step workflows.

Think of it this way: a chatbot answers questions. An AI agent answers questions, then goes and does something about it. Customer asks about their order status? The agent checks the system, finds the info, updates the record, and responds — all autonomously.

Current AI agents handle structured business processes well: customer service ticket resolution, data entry and processing, appointment scheduling, lead qualification, document processing, and research compilation. They''re the building blocks of [agentic AI](/glossary/agentic-ai) systems.

AI agents work inside platforms you may already use. HubSpot''s Breeze Agents, Salesforce''s Agentforce, and Microsoft''s Copilot Agents are all commercial implementations. You can also build custom agents using frameworks that connect [LLMs](/glossary/large-language-model-llm) to your business tools via APIs.

The distinction from [AI copilots](/glossary/ai-copilot): copilots assist you within a tool. Agents operate independently across tools to complete tasks. [Workflow automation](/glossary/workflow-automation) provides the plumbing that agents use to take actions.

## Why It Matters for Middle Market Companies

AI agents are rapidly becoming the primary way businesses deploy AI. Understanding what they can do — and where they fall short — helps you invest wisely.

For your business, agents handle the repetitive, multi-step work that currently eats up your team''s time. Customer service resolution, appointment booking, data processing, lead routing — these are all prime agent territory. The economics are compelling: agents work 24/7, handle volume spikes without hiring, and maintain consistent quality.

The limitations are real too. Agents need clear boundaries, good data, and human oversight for edge cases. They work best on structured, repeatable processes with clear success criteria.

Our [AI enablement services](/services/ai-enablement) include agent design and implementation. We help you identify which processes are ready for agents, build them with appropriate guardrails, and measure their performance.
